Would you like your garage to stand out? It’s time for some home improvement. Unlike organizing your garage, painting it is a new and different venture. There are some important tips to know once you have decided that you are going to paint the garage.

Should I Paint It On My Own?

To those who feel that they are confident to get the job done, it’s okay to look into a general contractor. General contractor services assist you in getting the job done for you.

Professional painters get the job done and ask you about what you would like completed for the project. Not only painting but general contractors also aid customers with roofing, landscaping, and plumbing.

If you would rather save money, here’s how to paint the garage on your own.

No Cracks and Seems to be Seen

Most painters will head straight to painting the garage. Stop right there. Take a look at the basement. See all those cracks and seems? It is very important to seal all creaks and seams. The cracks are likely to show once the job is finished. Use painter’s caulk to fill in gaps. Once all the cracks are filled, it’s time to start painting.

Bright and Bold Colors

Keep the colors bright and bold. However, you should paint the garage a color that you like. Make it reflect your personality. Pick colors that make you smile every time you go into the garage.

Neutral colors are your best bet. Color examples include beige, ivory, and brown. These colors easily go with everything. Paint the garage what you want, but, avoid dark colors. Dark colors are a bad idea because it makes the garage look small.

Outline the Walls

Pour the paint into a paint pail to make it easier. Cut in, or outline, the edge of the walls with paint, using a 2-inch angled paintbrush. Apply paint with a brush. And then paint everywhere a roller won't fit. Don’t leave out a speck.

How to Paint the Garage

-       Step 1: Clean the Walls

Painting on a dirty wall is not a good idea. Walls in a garage need to be cleaned first. Dust and other grime easily bleed through paint. First, clear the garage of any furniture or cars that block you.

Wipe down the walls with a rag or use a shop vac. Dawn dish soap is the best soap blend to use. Wear protective gear while doing so. Whatever you do, never pressure wash the walls. It is too much force and you will cause damage.

-       Step 2: Ventilation

Keep the garage door open for ventilation. That smell of paint is strong. Open it 6-8 inches so the wind won’t blow in any items and ruin the paint job. Keep anything from outside coming in and sticking to the floor.

-       Step 3: Mix Solutions

Mix a solution of bleach and water to soak and scrub the floor. Before scrubbing Let it sit for a few minutes. Make sure you soak it well when you are finished. Seal up cracks and repair damages to the concrete after the water has evaporated.

-       Step 4: Purchase Your Paint

Pick your paint color and purchase the amount necessary to get the job done. The sealant for all the cracks should be dry. The sealant has to be completely dry before you paint. Check to see if the walls or floor absorb water. If it doesn't consume water, it is not going to hold the paint.

-       Step 5: Applying the Paint

Have you ever seen a film where a painter started at the front and trapped themselves in the back of the garage? Don’t let this happen to you. Start painting from the back of the garage and work your way to the front so you can exit without messing up the paint.

The fastest method to paint your garage is to use an airless sprayer, particularly if you are painting everything at the same time. Clear space in front of the walls and cover everything with plastic before painting. Then apply a coat of primer after it is completely dry and ready. A primer will make it look all the better. Even better, primer makes it last longer.

Time to Wait

Paint takes time to dry. So, that means you should not put everything back into the garage. You can move items into a safe spot for the night. Once everything is complete, pat yourself on the back. You successfully painted the garage. Now if at any point during the process you’ve decided that painting your garage yourself sounds nice in theory, but in actuality, you’d much rather have the end result without the personal labor, Chadley Renovations is happy to take on all home renovation projects from midway abandoned DIYs to start to finish endeavors.
